Beginner guitar player, wheen does one become an “average” guitar player?
I started playing guitar a while ago, about a year ago or the first time, learned to read tab, learned how to pick notes and play A/E/D/Em/Am/E7/A7/B7 chords, and ive just rediscovered my guitar and Im thinking about getting a new electric guitar sometime but, I decided I should become a fairly okay player before I go spending my dosh on a snazzy electric guitar, and I know I’ve only just started, and your opinions of what an average guitar play should be able to do will vary but could you guys perhaps give me a bunch of targets to reach before i should go get my new guitar?

well i started on an electric so don’t let that worry you. i’ve been playing for just over 3 years now.
– and to be honest im a good guitar player, i play mostly hair metal stuff and can pull off some great solos, but if you told me to play a certain chord i wouldn’t be able to without consulting my chord book lol
so it kinda depends on how you go about it, im completely self taught, and have picked it all up buy just learning how to play tab. which i recommend since your learning the way YOU want to, if you’re taught by someone else your merely learning their style.
your best bet is to find some songs you like (with guitars in obviously) and look up how to play them; theres loads of websites to do this.

if your a fan of blink182 – their song “whats my age again” is a fun song to play especially if your just starting out since it has a mix of lead and rhythm guitar for you to do, and its easy.
if you really wanna push the boat out though start trying to play some hair metal stuff (winger, cinderella, motley crue, etc) that sh*t is AWESOME to play, especially when its REALLY LOUD! =D
