The “key” of a song seems like a mystery, but it really is not that big of a deal. You do not need to know music theory to understand or be able to determine the key of a particular song.

By using your ear and a TUNED guitar it is relatively easy to find the correct key of a song and even determine the chords and scale. First of all, what is the “key” of a song and what does this mean. In many cases the key of the song is nothing more than the tone of the first chord or note in the repetitive riff or verse of the song. Typically, if the first chord of a song is a C Major then the song will be in the key of “C”. Most songs revolve around 3 chords that sound good together. In many cases if a song is in the key of C it will include a F and G chord in the chord progression. This is not always true, but it tends to be the case. There are several examples of typical chord groupings or chord progressions that can be found at our web site.

Not much music theory in this bit of information, but how do you determine the key of a song with just your ear and a guitar. Well listen to the song and play the notes of the low E on the guitar from the first fret up to the 12th fret. Play them as you listen to the song and just keep moving up and down the frets until you find the note on the low E string that sounds good with the chord progression being played in the song. This is typically the root note for the chord and the scale for the song.

For example if you find that the note at the 5th fret of the low E sounds best for a particular song then the song is most probably in the key of A. Consult your list of chord progressions for the Key or A and try them while listening to the song. Chances are that it will sound right. Check out site our for more information.

To determine the scale first try playing the relative minor pentatonic scale over the chord progression you’ve determine was correct. In the example above use the A minor pentatonic. In many cases, this is all you will need to figure out the various notes and solos in the song. You may have to try other types of scales, but for most songs the pentatonic scale will work.

Now you have the basis for figuring out your favorite songs. Don’t let the fear of learning “music theory” scare you. You already know what you need to understand how songs are constructed. Trust your ears and your instincts, but most of all “Rock On”.

Is 22 years old a bad time to start to take guitar lessons?

I am about to start lessons for guitar, however I just wanted to know if I am to late to start a band or go solo as an indie artist? How many months or years will it take to just strum some chords and sing with a band or myself? Thank you very much!

Its all about your motivation and how you look at it. Is 23 years worse than 22? You’re still pretty young and have your entire life to learn more and more. As far as the time frame goes, it’s up to your intensity. An hour or two a day will get you strumming chords in about a week, a few months you’ll be putting those chords together into songs. I’ve seen people who’ve played for only 6 months get into solos and you couldn’t tell they just started 6 months ago. The first couple months are the most frustrating, but if you stick with it you may just find a rewarding life long hobby.

I’m sure you have spent many hours or days wishing you could learn guitar and play just like some of your hero’s. I started playing guitar when I was about 12 years old my dad played guitar and I would watch him play and I remember how I wished I could play like that. I would listen to my records and songs on the radio and be amazed at some of the great guitar players out there like Hendrix or SRV.

I thought to myself that this must be impossible, how could I learn guitar like these guys. So I asked my dad to get me started with some lessons and I then spent many years teaching myself to play guitar. This is one way to learn to play the guitar, it worked for me as I have been playing in a band for many years and have my own home recording studio and I just released a new CD of our own music, but it took many years to get to this point as I had to teach myself to play.

I can remember getting guitar lesson books from the music store and sitting down with them for day’s trying to figure them out but they didn’t teach me much, just a few chords at best. Man I wish the internet was around then so I could see videos and see pro players play their guitars I would have been playing in a band years before I was able to by teaching myself. Thanks to the Internet and the excellent pro teachers you can learn guitar and get the lessons from the pros.

Contrary to popular belief you do not have to be master guitar player to make good money from playing guitar. There are many more important factors that come into play than your guitar playing skill.

When I was 13 I begged my parents for a guitar for Christmas. They were reluctant to take that path; I assume because of the expected ensuing noise, but they went ahead anyway and bought me a guitar and amplifier from JC Penney. Two years later I was playing in bars almost every weekend and making more money in one or two nights than my friends were making all week working the night shift at Burger King.

So at 15 was I a guitar virtuoso? No I still basically sucked as did the band I was in. I mean we were horrible, yet sold out every night we played. Literally it was standing room only even on weeknights, and we played almost every bar in a 25 mile radius. It was 1980 when it began and this band still packs them in anytime they play even though they still basically suck.

What was the secret? The leader of this band was a genius at giving people what they wanted. He knew what they wanted and found a way to deliver it. People want to be entertained. If you can entertain people you can make money playing guitar. It is that simple.

At the time Oldies were a big thing, and this band happened to fill a local void by dressing the part, acting crazy on stage, and playing the songs that people wanted to hear. At 15 years old I was signing autographs, fending off advances from older women and making money playing guitar. My first experiences making money playing guitar came from simply giving the audience what they wanted.

A few years later the whole Urban Cowboy thing happened and, I happen to get into another band that was jumping on the country bandwagon. By this time I had spent a lot of time learning how to play guitar and my playing and vocal skills had come along way. I had also learned what it took to be valuable member of a band even though I still wasn’t the best guitar player in the world. Another band followed that one and so on until I finally retired from playing live in on New Years Eve 2005.

In addition to all the bands I played in I also did some solo and dual work and never played in a group that wasn’t working. During that time I learned the keys to making money playing guitar. The first key is filling the void for your audience. Most guitar players think they should go out there and play what they want to play. That doesn’t work if you want to make money playing guitar. People want to hear the songs they like and they want to hear it like the recording, solo and all.

The second key is to only play material you do well. If that means only playing simple songs, then only play simple songs. The audience does not know if a song is difficult, only if it sounded right. You do not get extra credit for trying something that was hard to play. You only lose points for not doing it right. If you know the audience is going to request a particular song and you can’t pull it off, find an alternative song by the same artist you can play instead.

The third key is that you must be willing to travel. You don’t need to travel across the country to make money playing guitar but you will need to get out of your local town. Here’s an interesting fact: most people will pay a band from out of town more money then they will a local band. There’s some weird belief that a band can’t be good if they’re local. I don’t get it but I used it to get paid.

Building a fan base is the fourth key and is more important in the beginning than getting more money. Connecting with your audience, talking with them between sets, having good stage banter with the crowd; all of these things lead to more money. You can act as cool as you want, but it doesn’t pay as well as being friendly. And that goes double with the person that hired you. You need to make them a fan by showing up on time, turning down if they ask you to and always cleaning up when you’re done. If they like you as a person they will have a higher impression of you as a performer and will pay you more. It is easy to raise your price once you build a fan base.

So now you know a little more about how to play guitar and make money doing it. I have done very well financially playing guitar in my lifetime even though most of the local music scene in my town never knew who I even was. It’s because I followed these keys that I got paid good money for playing guitar while the local “celebrity” bands were sometimes paying out of their own pockets to play. Always remember that being the best guitar player in the world does not mean that you will know how to make money doing it.

Quit my weekly guitar lessons… what now?

Well for the last 9 months I have been having weekly guitar lessons at my local music studio. The thing is… my teacher said my exams were coming up and I didn’t want exams! I just wanted to learn to play. Grading just seems a pointless chore for me, and I wasn’t getting anywhere it was just practicing from my grade book.

Exams are always a turn-off for many people–me included. I have a certain criteria that I follow when teaching my students, but I never give an end-of-month exam. Any performance skills are done during the lesson when I need to see how the student is learning and applying the skills I pass on.

For example, I will teach music theory which is very basic and then have the student play the short exercises. That is examination enough. If they can play an exercise in front of me that would be sufficient.

Get an instructor that follows not only his own criteria, but what would be beneficial for you.

Yes, you could now continue and learn on your own–provided you recognize what is important. Music theory–playing notation for the guitar–is crucial, so get started on that. Focus on chords and their progressions, and learn what the Chromatic Scale is in chords and in notation.

There are a wide variety of different kids karaoke machines with different features. Many come with CD players so that your child cannot only use them to perform karaoke but listen to their favorite music as well. Some even come with video cameras like the Disney Hanna Montana machine for karaoke.

Teaching Guitar Lessons?

I have been playing gitar for 6 yrs, and I know all the basics. so, i need a job for the winter months. Do u think its a good idea to teach guitar to kids? From experience, whats good and bad about it. and is there anyway I should teach it. like get certain books or just do my own thing? Just curious. Thank You

Teaching music is an awesome way to earn extra money. I used to teach piano and voice before I got my Bachelor of Education.

Some of your students will want to learn out of a guitar method. I’d suggest looking at a number of different options at your local music store and then, when you find one you like, tell the parents of the student (or the student if it’s an adult) to buy it for when they first start coming to lessons. Some students might just want to learn current tunes so then the question is, do you teach them to read music or just play by ear? You’ll get a feel for what they are looking for after a few lessons but having a method book will save you from having to buy different music for each student.

You can ask around at some guitar stores that offer lessons to see what the going rate is in your area and then put up some posters in your neighbourhood. Sometimes there are local magazines that have a public service announcement section that you can advertise in and you can also put an ad in the classifieds. They usually have a section for that.

Tuition Rising $24 America's colleges and universities are the best in the world. They are also the most expensive. Tuition has risen faster than the rate of inflation for the past thirty years. There is no indication that this trend will abate. Ronald G. Ehrenberg explores the causes of this tuition inflation, drawing on his many years as a teacher and researcher of the economics of higher education and as a senior administrator at Cornell University. Using incidents and examples from his own experience, he discusses a wide range of topics including endowment policies, admissions and financial aid policies, the funding of research, tenure and the end of mandatory retirement, information technology, libraries and distance learning, student housing, and intercollegiate athletics. He shows that colleges and universities, having multiple, relatively independent constituencies, suffer from ineffective central control of their costs. And in a fascinating analysis of their response to the ratings published by magazines such as U.S. News & World Report, he shows how they engage in a dysfunctional competition for students. In the short run, colleges and universities have little need to worry about rising tuitions, since the number of qualified students applying for entrance is rising even faster. But in the long run, it is not at all clear that the increases can be sustained. Ehrenberg concludes by proposing a set of policies to slow the institutions' rising tuitions without damaging their quality.

Learning to play the guitar provides loads of entertainment wherever you go as it can be carried and used wherever you want. No matter why you want to play the guitar; entertainment, leisure or enjoyment, you will find it very easy to learn how to play a guitar.

Anyone of any age and musical aptitude can learn to play a guitar. If you think you need instructions to learn to play the guitar, you may find it expensive using private and professional tuition. A better and cheaper alternative is to learn through the internet or books.

If you opt to learn through books, make sure you choose one that teaches you the best method to hold and tune the guitar, various methods to pluck and strum strings and how to read guitar tabs.

Find out who teaches you

If you choose to join a course, find out what is taught in the course, and if the lessons will be taught by a professional guitar player and teacher. It’s better to join the course that offers many testimonials from satisfied students so that you too will end up as one of these satisfied students too.

Basically, you have to start learning the functions and names of guitar parts, and the sounds it produces. You then learn the basic open chords like open C, G, A and D and on mastering them, you will be able to play quite a few tunes. Practice till you are skilled at playing chords in different ways. Moreover, the more flexible you are in shifting from one chord to another, the better you will be at playing the guitar.

Once you learn to read guitar tabs fluently, you will be able to play any song you want, in any style of guitar like classical, acoustic, Spanish and electric lead guitar. Of course, they have different techniques to learn the music, but the chords and tabs for all of them are the same.

Practice makes perfect

Like it’s said, practice makes perfect. So to become a perfect guitar player, you have to learn to practice as much as possible, as frequently as possible. While practicing, concentrate on different aspects of guitar playing like its tone, smoothness, accuracy and speed. This way, you find it much easier to improve your guitar playing skills.

Make it a point to practice at least five to seven days a week, for at least half an hour. The more frequently you practice, the faster you master the art of playing the guitar. In fact, to master your chords, its better to practice playing the guitar, without sound, while watching the TV or speaking to someone. After some time, you need to look less often at your fingers; just an occasional check will suffice.

While playing your chords, press down hard on the strings to grow calluses on the fingers. Though this may hurt at the start, once calluses develop, the pain disappears over times.

With these tips and steps, you will learn how to play a guitar within no time at all.

Um, when you say acoustic, do you mean classical or just good songs with a clean sound, not distortion?
