First Lesson for Guitar
$5.99 First Lesson for Guitar |
When I began trying to learn to play acoustic guitar everyone I asked told me I would never be able to play because I have rather large hands. This was truly discouraging, especially for a wide-eyed 17 year old flower child!
This did not deter me, however. I wanted to play so badly that I found a wide neck guitar that worked just fine; what a simple solution! Since that time I have discovered that many of the top guitarists in the world have one or another issues with their hands.
Django Reinhardt, the Gypsy jazz guitarist, suffered considerable damage to his left hand in a fire when he was 18 years old. In the hospital, he figured out new ways to play the guitar chords and was soon on his way again! Unbelievable tenacity and determination!
Doc Watson, the famous acoustic guitarist from the mountains of North Carolina, has such large hands that he frequently frets two strings at the same time. Not only that, he is blind and is single handedly responsible for making the flat picking style of guitar as popular as it is.
Joni Mitchell, the Canadian folksinger, plays dozens of different open tunings on her songs. This is because she was affected so much by polio as a child and later on as an adult. She had to find a way to compensate, and because of her determination, she found a way.
Andres Segovia, the famous Spanish classical guitarist, has very short, stubby hands. It nearly defies logic that he can play these beautiful songs the way he does with such hands. Yet, as his uncle said of him in his youth, “This boy does not learn, he remembers”.
This all goes to show that you do not need any special physical attributes to excel at playing guitar. What you really need is a keen desire. Like most things in life, if you really want to do something, you will find a way.
How to learn to play acoustic guitar
As stated, the most important element is a strong desire to master this beautiful instrument. Once you get the bug, it never really leaves you and every time you hear some good playing, you are stirred inside to continue learning. It doesn’t even matter what type of music you are listening to, if the playing is good, you hear it.
You need to get a playable guitar. Unless you are so poor that you have to make your instrument out of cigar boxes, like the blues artists of the past, you should be able to find a good quality guitar for around $300.
Whatever you do, avoid buying a cheap one. You will be shooting yourself in the foot, or rather the fingers. Your fingers will hurt, it will not sound good, and it will not stay tuned. That is, if you can get it tuned in the first place.
You also need to find some quality guitar courses, or instruction. You can find many good courses online, or at your local guitar shop. Taking lessons is also highly recommended, if you have the cash.
Your acoustic guitar needs a good hard shell case to protect it from the elements, as well as from the accidental drop that is just waiting to happen.
Make sure you get the best accessories you can afford. These will not make you a better player by themselves, but they are necessary anyway. A good tuner is essential, a humidifier is a must to preserve the wood, and a capo will make your life easier.
Take good care of your guitar, clean it regularly by using a spray cleaner made for acoustic wood. It is important to get good strings also, so your playing will have that nice ringing tone and clarity.
