Reading Chord Charts

Many beginners learn acoustic guitar songs by first reading the most simple chord charts. Once you’ve perfectly learned a few of these, you will find thousands of tunes you can play. The chord chart is similar to a diagram with vertical lines to represent the strings and horizontal lines to represent the frets.

Numbered dots are usually placed on the strings to symbolize fingers as they press to create the chord. If you have mastered the finger and hand positions for the chords and the basic strumming techniques, you are already on the way to learn guitar songs.

Reading Guitar Tabs

Tablature, commonly known as ‘tabs’, is another kind of music notation designed for the guitar specifically. Unlike chords, tabs are read horizontally rather than vertically. To put it differently, the horizontal lines on tabs show the strings, while the vertical lines show the divisions of the song.
